The 3T’s: How to Calm Your Mind Even When You’re Overwhelmed

Life is filled with surprise and we are constantly adapting to change, both internally and externally. Life’s fairly easy when all’s going well, but when we get thrown off center, it can be hard to calm ourselves and stay centered in the moment.

Be proactive. Rather than reacting in the moment and under pressure, I suggest you try practicing these tips regularly and see if you find you become better and better at adapting to life’s ups and downs.

Here are 3 tips:

  1. Tune in to YOU. Unplug. Stop. Turn everything off and breathe. Take time to check in with yourself several times a day.

  2. Take an inventory. Assess your body, mind, heart and spirit. When do you feel calm and peaceful? Acknowledge these areas. In what areas do you notice recurrent stress? Breathe your way through this inventory.  Just notice – without judgment and with compassion for yourself.

  3. Target one goal. Select a small step you can take toward lowering your stress and increasing your sense of calm. You may choose to simply focus on noticing your breath.  Or is there an improvement or change you want to create in your life? Or maybe it’s something you’ve already attempted without success or the one thing you’ve been too afraid to try. Make it a daily practice to work with this goal, so that you can begin to integrate the confidence that, when overwhelmed, you are able to feel and say to yourself,  “I've got this.”
